rearc institute’s first symposium in South America—arquitecturas de buen-vivir planetario—pays homage to the Andean concept of “buen vivir,” which expresses a symbiotic existential relationship between nature and humanity. This ancient indigenous value system reveres the fundamental interconnectedness of all life, expressed through a holistic and integrated approach to solidarity and the fundamental rights of every organism in an ecosystem. Rooted in this point of departure, our program explores interdisciplinary methods for moving away from extractive and isolating relationalities and towards spatial practices informed by discourse, reciprocity, and harmony. The program welcomes a plurality of perspectives across geographies and cultural contexts in order to support hyperlocal pathways towards new planetary collectivities.

It’s been said that we spend our lives trying to discern where we end and the rest of the world begins. A subterranean cultural shift is now happening in the form of a growing desire for better ways of understanding our deeply symbiotic lives. For this we will need novel epistemologies, expanded vocabularies, and explorations of the alternate socialities that they could enable: a language for better sensing these in-between world(s) and new metaphors to live through. This opening conversation will share thoughts on poetics and/of possibility, grounded in collective practices and territorial entanglements.

Architects & educators Catalina Mejía Moreno, Felipe Arturo and Gabriela Leandro Pereira share their process on curriculum creation, emerging from their lived experiences in lands where rivers and seas encounter each other, merge and collide: Salvador, Brazil; Barranquilla, Colombia; and Southend by Sea, UK.
This interlude is an invitation to immerse, collectively, in an exercise of listening to people and waters of sensitive interdependence and to question how to receive and respond in gratitude to such glossary of voices.

Our symposium program is grounded by two sessions of concise presentations by practitioners representing seven spatial practices from around the world. With a focus on considering how interdisciplinary methods can present in this work, their approaches are both diverse in their points of entry and expansive in their visioning around the planetary.
