re:arc institute invites you to join us for the second iteration of our biannual symposium program dedicated to exploring the architectures of planetary well-being, which we understand as ongoing practices of custodianship and care towards our socio-ecological environments.
Architectures of planetary well-being offer an approach to understanding the frameworks that connect these systems, in turn allowing us to imagine the relational change needed to move beyond extractive paradigms.
The in-person gathering will be a program across two evenings, in collaboration with practitioners from a range of disciplinary perspectives—including architects, designers, environmental organizers, and artists—to consider themes that have emerged through and since our first symposium in February, particularly in regard to material realities and processes and our collective understandings of well-being and grief.
The program will take place in London, on November 17 and 18, 2023 from 18:00 - 23:00 between the Zilkha Auditorium and Gallery 2 at venue Whitechapel Gallery and is co-convened in collaboration with Free Form World a cultural production studio by Nate Agbetu, building collaborations, commissions and programming for the formation of new worlds.
Entry is permitted by RSVP, we encourage you to sign up at our eventbrite pages for November 17th and November 18th.
Our first evening of programming—a series of provocations across three formats—will begin by inviting four practices from the UK, Senegal, and India to speak about the material realities and processes that inform local planetary practices, as well as our connectedness around them. These will include the London-based and interdisciplinary Resolve Collective and post-carbon design and research practice Material Cultures; Worofila, a Dakar architecture studio considering the future of local, climate-considerate design; and Anupama Kundoo, a Berlin-based architect working through time as a modality.

An after dinner conversation with architectural writer, historian, editor, and educator Shumi Bose and Anupama Kundoo reflecting on temporality, research-based processes, and the provocations offered earlier.
The evening will close with a sonic meditation and groove from Touching Bass, a South London-based musical movement/curatorial platform lead by Errol and Alex Rita.
We'll close the night with some remarks from the re:arc team.
Our second evening of programming will open with a breathwork experience led by Lina Salih Didi, a trauma-informed practitioner working in various modes of somatic embodiment, accompanied by a performance from Austrian-Ethiopian harpist Miriam Adefris.
"Rehearsing Freedoms,” a keynote by Farzana Khan of Healing Justice London, will introduce her practice of visionary organizing, and emphasize the importance of carving out the time and space to actively practice for the futures we wish to create in the present.
To close the evening, we will host a conversation between climate justice organizer and writer Tori Tsui and artist, curator, and publisher Georgina Johnson. In this hour of dialogue, they will both address some active practices for collectively expressing and processing emotions around planetary connectedness and our climate futures. We ask how we process grief can help us move away from fear to practices of hope and possibility.
We will conclude the evening with a plant-based meal over a set from broadcaster, writer, and DJ Zakia Sewell. Please contact rearc@rearc.institute for any inquiries about dietary restrictions and/or allergies.
